Picking the Right Airplane Management Company

Selecting the Right Airplane Management Company

Private airplane owners have many reasons to own an aircraft. The reasons are as diverse as the people that own them. Some plane owners may want to exclusively fly their own plane and never let anyone else behind the controls, while others will want to use theirs as a charter as much as possible when they’re not using it. Regardless of the reasons, picking the right plane management company will help you get the most out of your investment. Here are a few of the most important considerations when deciding on the right management company.

PILOT EXPERIENCE

If you are considering allowing your plane to be chartered by your management company, pilot experience is sure to be near the top of your list of concerns. You want experienced pilots with excellent safety records that fly the management company’s planes like they are their own. Don’t be afraid to ask the company to provide information on their current pilot staff. It’s a good idea to interview a few of the pilots if you still have concerns.

MAINTENANCE FACILITIES AND PERSONNEL

Maintenance is at the heart of airplane safety. Whether you exclusively fly your own plane or charter it, your plane management company should have complete airplane maintenance facilities and experience with your aircraft type. From a fully stocked parts department to avionics, major overhauls, inspections and more should be available on-site. Your management company should also help you keep track of all required inspections and maintenance requirements. You’re looking for a partner, not just a parking spot!

FEES

Fees can vary quite a bit from management company to management company so be sure to ask the right questions before committing. What are my monthly costs? What is included in that cost? What type of insurance is required? How much is fuel? Ask other pilots that currently use the prospective plane management company and see if there are any hidden costs.

SAFETY

Review the company’s safety record! Look for any indication that safety is not a part of their corporate culture. If you suspect it’s not, then look elsewhere!
